Stay Away From Your Desk

Of course, any real estate professional must spend time at their desk – making phone calls, preparing presentations, conducting research, drawing up contracts, doing the business of real estate. But, don’t underestimate the value of getting away from your desk and interacting with the world outside your office once in a while. You are in the business of sales and valuable connections are made when you step out and meet people.

I learned this lesson myself just today. I had an errand to run at lunch time. As I walked down the street, I passed by the office of a real estate attorney I hadn’t spoken to in a while. I sent a quick text to see if he was free, and 10 minutes later we were catching up over coffee in his office. We updated one another on our respective businesses and shared some valuable insights with one another about what we were observing in the market. Our relative perspectives were helpful to one another.

Walking back to my office I bumped into a real estate agent I also hadn’t seen in quite some time. I asked her how business was going for her and she confided in me that she was more busy than ever but was really struggling to balance work and life. I told her about my firm and my approach to the business and mentioned that coaching might help her and gave her my card. She hugged me and said she would call me next week.

These simple interactions, together with some desire and finesse in recognizing the opportunities, are important aspects of your business development. Take advantage of the time away from your desk to do some live connecting.
