6 Tips for Getting the Most out of Open Houses

6 Tips for Getting the Most out of Open Houses

We all go to open houses. Some people are serial open house attendees, approaching them with the focus and thoroughness of an Army drill sergeant. Others take a more casual approach, wandering in on a whim. But no matter how you approach them, if you’re really looking for a home, it’s best to go into an open house with a plan. Here are a few tips:

  1. Introduce yourself to the agent hosting the open house. Being friendly and engaging with the agent may yield helpful, bonus information about the property.

  2. If you are already working with a buyer’s agent, let the open house agent know who it is. The open house agent will likely follow up with your agent and may share pertinent information about the property and/or the offer process. This can only help.

  3. Take a listing sheet if available. You’ll obtain essential details about the property, such as square footage, condo fee, taxes, and a take-away reference to help you remember the property.

  4. Keep a level head, even if you fall in love with the property the moment you walk through the door. Carefully look at each room, inspect closet space, consider the floor plan, imagine how you would live in the property. Objectivity is your best friend.

  5. Ask if you can see any space outside of the living space, such as basement, storage, roof deck, patio. It’s important that you see everything included in what you may be purchasing.

  6. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. It’s natural to have questions and the open house agent knows the property better than anyone. Ask away.
