Moving? I Have Tips.
Somehow I have just completed my 18th house move in 30 years. This, even though I have genuinely hoped and believed that each one would be my last. (What can I say? Clearly, I fall in love with homes!) So I certainly feel justified in calling myself a veteran mover. And while it never gets any easier, I have become smarter with each move.
Here are a few simple tips I’ve learned to help smooth out your moving day:
- As you wake up on the day of your move, pack your bedding, sheets, towels, pillows into a box, clearly label it and move it into your new home yourself. Oh, and don’t forget to add your toothbrush, soap and shampoo. You’ll be thankful you can find all this easily later.
- If your movers are taking you out of your old home and into your new home on the same day, be prepared to do a lot of hanging around; movers need time to wrap furniture, load their truck, etc. It’s your opportunity to make sure all your boxes are sealed and labeled with which room they’re to be placed in. Different-colored Post-it notes can help.
- If you are not bringing in professional cleaners, this might also be the time to do a little cleaning for your buyer. Doublecheck the refrigerator and kitchen shelves.
- Pack a picnic. It’s a busy day and you may not have time to grab lunch. A sandwich and some water ensure that you won’t go hungry and won’t have to run out for food in the midst of your move.
- When the movers arrive at your new home, be prepared to play conductor. They will need help understanding where your furniture and items are to be placed. Station someone close to the door to keep things moving as each item comes into the house.
- Perhaps my best piece of advice: Moving day is just that. It’s not unpacking day. For today, find your box of bedding and once your bed is situated in your home, make it up.
- When the movers have left, don’t feel overwhelmed staring at all the boxes. Instead, order pizza, then focus on eating, showering, and getting some sleep. The unpacking can begin in the morning when you are better rested.
Good luck!
